Serre Chevalier players mobilised for the preservation of the black grouse

The Écrins National Park (PNE), the Monêtier hunting company, the National Forestry Office, the elected representatives of the commune and the Serre Chevalier resort have joined forces to ensure the tranquillity of this emblematic bird, discreet and increasingly rare.

In Serre Chevalier, for several years now, encounters with the "little rooster" have been rare in this corner of the mountain, even if "there is a natural habitat that is very favourable to the species," assures Jean-Pierre Bergeon, monitor of the PNE.

It is on the north-eastern slope of Cibouit mountain, a major off-piste skiing area served by the chairlift of the same name, that the quiet zone will be created this year: markers, ropes and pennants will ensure both the pleasure of skiing and the tranquillity of the birds. "Similar zones of tranquillity, notably in the Ecrins, Mercantour and Queyras areas, have already produced encouraging results, with an increase in bird populations in just a few years".

For the partners who are currently studying the technical elements and financial feasibility of the project, "the desire to involve as many people as possible in its realisation" is unanimous, as is the interest in bringing it to fruition.
For this, broad communication and awareness raising, particularly among mountain professionals, is important so that this project can see the light of day and be a success.
